Welcome to the website for the State Department of Washington and Alaska, Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, 1861-1865.
We are one of the five Allied Orders of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), founded in 1866, for Union veterans who had fought to preserve this country. Members have proven lineal descent from soldiers, sailors, and spies who served the Union cause for preserving our Nation during the Civil War, 1861-1865.
We are a 501(c)(3) women’s service organization seeking to promote patriotism, foster education, and encourage historic preservation. Our forefathers fought to protect these goals and our duty is to promote them.
This organization consists of three levels: National Department, Department of one-two States (in this case the Department of Washington and Alaska), and a local level called Tents, or “Detached” Tents (when there are only one or two Tents in a State). Tents are named after Civil War nurses or women known to have provided significant support to this country in its early history.
I hope you will decide you agree with our mission and choose to join us!
In Fraternity, Charity, and Loyalty,
Peggy Goldenman
